Forward Osmosis Membrane Technology for the Petroleum Industry Wastewater Treatment
Forward osmosis (FO) technology has received increasing interests as a potential low‐fouling membrane process and a new approach to treat petroleum industry wastewaters. Lower and/or reversible membrane fouling propensity, lower hydraulic pressures or energy demand, and higher water recovery can be the main advantages of FO process compared to the other pressure‐driven membrane (e.g., nanofiltration and reverse osmosis) processes. However, one of the limitations of this process is concentration polarization (CP) effect. In this chapter, FO technology as an emerging membrane process, main factors in FO technology, literature review of FO technology for treatment of petroleum industry wastewater, recent advances in FO membranes, challenges ahead and future perspective are briefly discussed. The industrial‐scale studies are required and further efforts should be made to find proper high‐performance membranes and suitable low cost draw solutions to utilize FO technology for treatment of oily wastewater at full‐scale.
