Calcareous Mortars, Plasters and Floors
Calcareous mortars have been used since prehistoric times. America lime mortars were also extensively used. Hydraulic mortars of the first millennium BC were reported by some authors in Israel. The preparation of calcareous mortars can be summarized as follows: limestone (CaCO3) is calcined (between 800 and 1000 °C) in a kiln to produce quicklime (CaO). Slaked with water, quicklime is converted into hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2). Detailed instructions for the preparation of mortars and plasters in Roman times were given by several ancient authors, especially Vitruvius. The microscopic study of mortars can be divided in two groups: one dealing with fabric and components, similar to petrographic or micromorphological studies, and the other focussing on the measurement of porosity (e.g., after impregnation with a fluorescent dye). Petrographic studies contribute to the understanding of the techniques used, the source of the material and often also to the environmental and cultural context.
