Vegetated Waterways and Bioswales
Vegetated waterways, erosion, and diversion terraces and, lately, bioswales are open channels with intermittent flows. This chapter focuses on design methods commonly used in the United States. Vegetated channels represent a channel with a natural lining. Vegetation addition is a classical approach for increasing the sustainability economic desirability of earthen channels. In many respects, vegetative waterway design is like channel planning for any channel plus vegetation selection. Specific planning steps include the following: runoff determination, channel slope, channel cross section, vegetation selection, design velocity for stability, and trapezoidal and triangular side slopes. The chapter presents examples that show the calculation details and discuss the design spreadsheet aids. Low impact development is driving the consideration of bioswales and related vegetated waterways. Bioswale specification involves engineering, ecology, and landscape architecture professionals. The vegetative filter strip is a sheet flow mechanism. Temporary linings are frequently used to protect the channel during vegetation establishment.
