Improving Small Systems for Fire Protection
Safe drinking water, rather than fire protection, is usually the impetus for improvements to water systems. Although smaller systems do not have massive, high‐powered delivery systems, many rural and suburban communities are nevertheless concerned about improving their water transmission capacities to provide or enhance fire‐fighting capacities. This paper discusses the benefits of improved fire‐fighting capacity and describes the improvements one small community has made to increase water pressure and improve transmission in its water system. The experiences of another small community in developing guidelines that address fire flow capabilities are also discussed.
