Design of strengthening with near‐surface‐mounted CFRP strips
Besides strengthening options with externally bonded reinforcement, the Deutscher Ausschuss fü;r Stahlbeton (DAfStb) guideline also includes a design concept for flexural strengthening using near‐surface‐ mounted CFRP strips. The method for designing near‐surface‐mounted CFRP strips is attributed to Blaschko and has been incorporated in the DAfStb guideline virtually unchanged from the earlier approvals. As with externally bonded CFRP strips, the analysis of the flexural strength can be carried out in a similar way to that for a conventional reinforced concrete member by investigating the cracked cross‐section. When analysing the shear capacity, the same requirements apply for near‐surface‐mounted CFRP strips as for externally bonded strips. When checking fatigue for non‐static loads, the DAfStb guideline can be used to verify the bond of flexural strengthening in the form of near‐surface‐mounted CFRP strips. This chapter analyses the serviceability limit state of near‐surface‐mounted CFRP strips.
