Criteria for Selecting Strengthening Methods – Case Studies
When it comes to the retrofit of existing buildings, however, the criteria for strengthening a building are generally more complex. In strengthening and retrofit interventions, the identification of the structural weaknesses, specific problematic members, local concentration of forces, and the consequences of the collapse of a particular member all play a major role in the selection of the intervention technique(s), as well as the locations of the interventions. When selecting the most appropriate strengthening technique, apart from the direct financial cost for the structural interventions, one should always consider the cost for the works on the nonstructural components and the indirect operational costs. This chapter discusses some characteristic case studies of strengthening interventions. In all the examples, after a brief description of the existing building, its deficiencies, the reasons that led to the decision for structural retrofit and the strengthening strategy are explained, together with the criteria why the specific retrofit measures were selected.
