There are four main approaches for the quantification of building performance when looking at buildings as objects: physical measurement, building performance simulation, expert judgment and user evaluation. A special category may be added that consists of approaches that study the performance of building in terms of the construction process. This chapter attempts to give a comprehensive overview of various approaches and tools in each category. Given the many tools that are available, finding the right tool for an analysis job is a non‐trivial challenge. In practice, availability of specific tools may have significant impact on what analysis is actually conducted. It is noted that there are relationships between physical measurement, building performance simulation, expert judgment and user evaluation but that these relations are not one to one, leaving many missing links.
