An Overview of Techniques and Application for Quality Evaluation
This chapter provides a brief overview of the principles, advantages, limitations, and applications of the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods with specific examples. It outlines a brief overview of the R&D trends in NDE for corrosion evaluation. Visual examination is one of the oldest, simplest, and widely used methods for the inspection of defects/discontinuities open to the surface. While conventional radiography utilized the film as the detector medium, digital radiography uses digital detector arrays and imaging plates. NDE is always considered as a quality assurance tool to ascertain the extent of corrosion in a component after it is put in service. The chapter presents a specific case of zirconium hydriding, an important and life‐limiting phenomenon in the case of nuclear pressure/calandria tubes of pressurized heavy water reactors.
