The “Reinforced Earth” technique is simple because it combines three materials: selected backfill with controlled granular grading, strip reinforcement and concrete panels. Henri Vidal invented the “Reinforced Earth: RE” technique in 1964. Ever since then, this simple and relatively inexpensive process has experienced considerable success in France and around the globe. An RE wall consists of the following distinct materials: backfill, flexible reinforcements, and concrete facing panels. The nailing technique involves inserting linear metallic rods as reinforcement, either by sealing with cement grout, by using a mortar in an initial borehole, by hammering or by vibro‐drilling into in situ soil. The micropile technique consists of strengthening the soil with small‐diameter piles with high tension that are anchored in a relatively high‐compact soil, which is underlying soil that is mechanically weak.
