Polymeric and Copolymeric Scale Inhibitors: Trends and Opportunities
Copolymers and polymers with advantages such as environmental friendliness, renewability, and rich organic sources can be used as good scale inhibitors for process equipment. Owing to their unique features, copolymers, and polymers have attracted significant attention from diverse areas of research. Currently, they are used as corrosion and scale inhibitors because, through their organic functionalities, they form complexes with metal ions. These complexes occupy a large surface area on the metal surface, thereby protecting the metal from corrosive agents via blocking mechanism, delaying and preventing scale deposition. The proposed chapter will elaborate more on the synthesis and application of different copolymers and polymers as sustainable scale inhibitors for different metals in various hostile environments. This is because copolymers and polymers as corrosion and scale inhibitors have been observed to be highly efficient at low concentrations and thus align with the requirements for sustainable development goals. Hence, an overview of the trends of copolymers and polymers as scale inhibitors is collectively summarized in this chapter.
