Puerto Madero makes a strong impact on the city in which it is situated. As a new mixed‐use centre, its generous and airy urban layout drastically contrasts with Buenos Aires' dense inner‐city grid, and symbolises the country's entry into the 21st century. In principle, the idea of constructing an efficient and centrally located port goes back to the city's foundation, and is inherently linked to its strategic position on the estuary of the River Plate. The study of the history of Buenos Aires and its relation to the river illustrates how a change in lifestyle and urban economy can impact the shape and development dynamics of a city. The city has consolidated its position as one of Latin America's most attractive and diverse capitals. It does so in emphasising its morphological differences, based on the port heritage, rather than through the adoption of the city's rigid grid.
