Concentrated Leak Erosion
This chapter is dedicated to concentrated leaks with erosion, with emphasis on the experimental characterization in the laboratory of the critical shear stress and the coefficient of concentrated leak erosion, by means of the hole erosion test (HET). At the large scale, simplified mechanically based relations relate the time to failure and the peak flow to the two basic parameters of failure, the coefficient of erosion, and the maximum pipe diameter prior to roof collapse. That is up to the time the crest is first breached. The same model is used for the interpretation of HETs, and for dam and levee breaks due to concentrated leak erosion.
