Stability of Rock Wedges and Excavation Surfaces
Potential modes of failure of rock wedges at excavation surfaces and underneath foundations are described. The stability of two dimensional rock wedges against sliding on one discontinuity according to the partial safety factor method is investigated. Self‐weight, water pressure and anchor forces are accounted for. The equations for sliding along polygonal surfaces are also outlined. An extension to sliding of three dimensional rock wedges is made. Also, failure due to rotation of rock wedges, such as toppling, is dealt with. Finally, buckling of rock columns and layers is shown to be a mode of failure.
