Inspection Methods for Offshore Structures Underwater
Many different inspection methods are available to determine the in‐service condition of a structure underwater or in the splash zone. Underwater inspection was mainly undertaken by divers up to the 1980s. Visual inspection using photographic and TV documentation was the primary method. industry practice now includes a range of non‐destructive inspection methods for use underwater such as general and close visual inspection, ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection, eddy current inspection, radiographic testing, leak detection testing and flooded member detection. The chapter presents an overview of methods used for underwater inspection of offshore structures. Demonstration of both individual and organisational competency is increasingly being recognised as very important for managing safety by minimising gross errors where humans and organisations are involved. Fixed steel structures are normally inspected underwater, in the splash zone and above the splash zone. Concrete gravity‐based structures are massive compared to steel jackets.
