Seismic Retrofitting of Bridge Piers with UHPFRC Jackets
This chapter presents the results of an experimental program in which two full‐scale bridge pier specimens were fabricated with reinforcement details according to specifications that existed before modern seismic resistance recommendations where implemented. Two conditions were tested: a reference specimen with poor detailing; and an identical specimen strengthened with an ultra high performance fiber‐reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) jacket. More appropriate reinforcement detail requirements have been included in recent codes to ensure sufficient ductility of the structure. The chapter discusses the strengthening of highly rectangular cross‐sections by introducing a new technique that uses a thin jacket made of fiber‐reinforced concrete (FRC) in the lap splice regions at the base of a column. The concept proposed addresses the use of FRC jackets for retrofitting existing columns that are used only in the cover in the lap splice region.
