Effect of Road Roughness on Extraction of Bridge Frequencies
This chapter focuses on the effect of road roughness that is critical to the extraction of bridge frequencies from the recorded acceleration response of the passing test vehicle. The vehicle scanning method for measuring bridge frequencies is a potentially powerful technique for its mobility, movability, and economy, compared with the conventional technique that requires vibration sensors to be directly installed on the bridge. A numerical simulation is conducted using the vehicle‐bridge interaction (VBI) element developed to demonstrate how the road roughness affects the vehicle response. Numerical simulations are conducted using the VBI elements to demonstrate the polluting effect of road roughness on the vehicle response. The effect of road roughness is also investigated by an approximate, but quite accurate, theory in closed form, from which the effects of two excitational sources to the vehicle, i.e., road roughness and bridge's vibration, can be clearly interpreted.
