This chapter first explains an analytical protocol, based on the two‐source energy balance algorithm, to estimate urban surface heat fluxes by combined use of remotely sensed data and routine measurements of a weather station. This method is applied to four Terra's Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer images of Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, to assess seasonal spatial pattern in the surface energy balance and intra‐urban variability of energy fluxes. Furthermore, the chapter investigates anthropogenic heat discharge and energy use from residential and commercial buildings using two different methods in Indianapolis. First, anthropogenic heat discharge is estimated using a surface energy balance method. Then energy use from residential and commercial buildings is calculated using a building energy modeling method. Finally, the chapter examines the relationship between remotely sensed anthropogenic heat discharge and building energy use across multiple spatial scales.
