Multipurpose Solution to Stormwater Problem
This article reports on a construction project in Charlotte, North Carolina, to alleviate flooding at an intersection of the city when water in this area backs up because the culverts are too small to handle unusually heavy rainfalls. A local engineering consultant, working with Charlotte Storm Water Services, developed an initiative that would slow down runoff before it reached the overburdened culverts. It was decided that a section in nearby Sedgefield Park would be set aside to temporarily store water during infrequent heavy rain. The water collected could be released downstream over a short period of time after the height of a storm, thereby relieving the existing culverts of the runoff overload.
