Site Investigation, Drilling, and Sampling
Site investigation is the first step in solving most geotechnical engineering problems. This step has a significant impact on the cost of construction. This chapter deals with onshore and offshore site investigations. A site investigation takes place in two steps: the preliminary investigation and the main investigation. The word sounding is used in this chapter to refer to both borings and in situ tests. About two to six soundings are performed for average size buildings and bridges. Drilling rigs come in many different sizes, shapes, purposes, and setups. The two most common methods of drilling for soil samples are the wet rotary method and the hollow stem auger. The objective in sampling a soil or rock deposit is to obtain samples that have the least amount of disturbance. The level of the groundwater at a site is a very important piece of information for any geotechnical investigation.
