NETWORK ARCH BRIDGES WITH ROLLED SECTIONS: IDEAS FOR ECONOMIC AND DURABLE DETAILING
In the 50‐ to 120‐meter span range, the bowstring bridge (arch above the traffic way anchored in the deck acting as tie so to equilibrate the horizontal component) is an aesthetic and effective solution when available construction height is limited. Beside the bridges realized as landmarks and therefore designed with specific architectural features, there are more and more realizations characterized by pragmatic structural choices aiming at optimized and economic construction. Different from vertical or radial hanger arrangement, the network bridge minimizes the bending moments thanks to the optimized arrangement, with the arch working mainly in compression with very little eccentricity. For this case, the arches can be realized with heavy rolled HD sections in high steel strength, developing an effective and economic solution.
