Water‐bath modelling – small‐scale simulation of natural ventilation flows
The movement of air inside buildings, like the movement of water and wind, is very difficult to model using digital techniques. Furthermore, measuring the slow movement of invisible air is almost impossible. A technique that is growing in use, especially for high‐performance, naturally‐ventilated buildings, is to use water as a model material. Coloured water with a density different to the ambient liquid (either less dense when heated, or more dense when containing dissolved salt) can be introduced into a model and its movement studied and recorded for later analysis using computer models.
