This chapter deals with how timber copes with the stresses imposed on it and what factors designers must consider when calculating the sizes of members for different purposes, such as floor beams and roof timbers. It considers the sorts of loads that are applied to structures in general terms and how they are transferred through – and resisted by – them. The chapter looks at the ways different loads can be applied to structural elements and the implications for the performance of these components. Whether a piece of timber is visually strength graded or graded by machine, the end result is regarded as being the same: the piece, if it meets the specific criteria, can be assigned into a strength class. The chapter outlines the three main things – load duration, moisture content, and load sharing – that are by far the most commonly used by engineers when designing in timber.
