Tomb Architecture
The chapter discusses the principal aspects of tomb architecture in Thrace. More than 200 tombs are known within the region; they are found primarily in northeastern and southern Thrace, and are chronologically restricted to the mid fourth–mid third centuries BCE. The tombs were built on the ancient terrain and mounded over; the construction made use of various types of stone, in diverse degrees of finish, as well as brick. In general, the structures consist of a burial chamber, antechamber, and a passage chamber or dromos, sometimes both. The wide range of roof constructions, like the corbel vault and dome, as well as the barrel vault, prompt an in‐depth study. Tombs are also distinguished from one another by their use of Ionic or Doric doorframes in the façade and by the presence or absence of stone, single‐ or double‐leaved doors. Though not very common, funerary beds of various kinds are also an essential part of the funerary furniture.
