Nondestructive Evaluation of Corrosion
Case Studies I
This chapter deals with the commonly used nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods for corrosion monitoring. Some of the advanced NDE methods that are now being increasingly used in the industry for corrosion monitoring are also discussed. NDE techniques can broadly be classified into three categories, viz. surface examination techniques, volumetric examination techniques, and performance tests. The monitoring of uniform corrosion by ultrasonic test is based on measurement of wall thickness. Pitting corrosion is one of the commonly observed degradation mechanisms in tubes of heat exchangers. Eddy current test (ECT) is an effective NDE method for this purpose. Intergranular corrosion (IGC) is a form of localized corrosion that proceeds along grain boundaries. The in situ metallography is an effective tool to detect the IGC at an early stage. Eddy current testing using high frequency surface coil is an effective NDE technique for detection of stress corrosion cracking.
