Economic and Design Considerations for Membrane Filtration at a Lime Softening Plant
This article discusses the rehabilitation of a lime softening‐mixed media filtration plant with the city of Murfreesboro (Tennessee) Water and Sewer Department (MWSD). The article discusses the process of evaluating which type of membrane filtration system would best fit the city's needs and the configuration in which the membranes should be placed. The two options that were considered include: a vacuum‐driven, immersed membrane technology; or, a pressure‐driven, containerized design. Also at issue was whether the membranes should be installed before or after granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration. Membrane flux, construction costs, and membrane pilot‐testing are discussed.
