Civic Engagement Tools for Urban Conservation
Julian Smith in his essay ‘Civic Engagement Tools for Urban Conservation’ expounds on the need to recognize that the conservation and management of historic urban landscapes and their heritage foremost deals with experience, re‐enactment and revitalization from within. Cultural mapping and community participation in conservation planning have become important tools to foster civic engagement and to make conservation meaningful and successful, based on the recognition that the management of heritage rests in the hands of its creators and custodians, not in the hands of absent caretakers.
An interview with His Highness the Aga Khan highlights the importance of engaging the communities of beneficiaries from the beginning of an intervention, in order to shape programmes that are responding to effective local needs, and not to preconceived ideas of decision makers. A case study by Richard Engelhardt presents the Cultural Diversity Lens, a tool developed to recognise and value local cultural specificities.
