Determination of Hydrogen Chloride in Liquid Chlorine
This study determines the amount of hydrogen chloride in liquid chlorine, based on the procedure of Barham and Thomson, who determined hydrogen chloride in the presence of chlorine by absorbing it in hydrochloric acid solution. The study also discusses a method in which chromyl chloride (Cr02C12) is formed, and in the last step of the procedure chromate ion is determined colorimetrically with diphenyl carbazide. That method was found to be not only troublesome, but it also gave low results. The easily volatilized substances chlorine and hypochlorous acid can be removed by boiling, and the amount of hydrogen chloride absorbed from the gas stream can then be determined by titration, with a small correction to be determined from a blank.
