Mapping Sustainability in the Quantity Surveying Curriculum
Educating Tomorrow's Design Economists
This chapter addresses how sustainability is incorporated into the education curriculum, to address professional competencies in all areas of the construction related programmes but with specific reference to quantity surveying (QS). It seeks to identify a benchmark that effectively delivers the sustainability knowledge within the construction related programmes. The chapter proposes a strategy that will support the development of desired sustainability competencies. It focuses on the examination of QS degree programmes as case studies to identify broad and specific changes needed to develop competencies for sound sustainable QS practices. The chapter attempts to establish and map the sustainability activities within the QS programme. Primary data collected using case studies are used to qualitatively map the extent of sustainability‐related features within the curriculum in the QS degree programmes. The findings of both the secondary and the primary data are analysed to determine the extent of sustainability‐related education within the curriculum.
