Comparison of Computed and Recorded Earthquake Responses of Dams
The ultimate test of the linear analysis procedure that includes dam–water–foundation interaction is to compare the computed responses with motions of dams recorded during earthquakes. After discussing the difficulties of finding good examples, this chapter presents one such comparison for Tsuruda Dam in Japan subjected to an earthquake and subsequent aftershocks that caused no damage; hence, this is a case that is amenable to linear analysis. The chapter demonstrates that the analysis procedure can very closely match the recorded motions of the dam. Thereafter, the chapter revives an old (1970s) investigation of linear analysis of Koyna Dam that sustained significant damage from an earthquake. The earthquake performance of Koyna Dam and the subsequent dynamic analysis of the dam are of historical interest because they had an enormous influence on the development of earthquake engineering for concrete gravity dams.
