Collective Design for Collective Living
Collective Design for Collective Living is an ongoing research project that began in the summer of 2020 as an inquiry into the application of value systems, disciplinary expertise, and the role of the architect within emerging design processes that engage new forms of human and machine collaboration. Procedurally, the research utilises the New England triple‐decker, a largely codified residential building type, as the jumping‐off point for machine‐enabled design collaboration and form generation. The methods used within the ongoing Collective Design for Collective Living research generally break down into data set creation, training the neural network model, constraining the model output, and designing a program for stakeholder input and model interaction. The method used to learn the facade elements contained within the Boston triple‐decker data set is image‐to‐image translation with conditional adversarial nets.
