Town Planning and Urban Pattern: the Emergence of Circulatory Function
The term "town planning" is recent and refers to the contemporary period. Strictly speaking, the history of town planning, as a discipline, is limited to modern times. With the Renaissance, the city emerged from its ramparts and freed itself from previous spatial constraints. Royal squares and perspectives which reconnected with the ancient city heritage appeared. Better developed urban patterns did not undergo any essential modifications. The development of modern urban transport was largely dominated by two major inventions including the combustion engine and electric traction. The control of electric traction strongly stimulated the development of the tramway in the late 19th Century. Progressive town planning and naturalism theories differed on many points: the former, for example, did not reject density, while the latter advocated some sort of dilution of the city in natural spaces.
