MCDA and Assessing Sustainability
Chapter 10 looks at the technique of multiple criteria decision analysis in the context of evaluating sustainable development. It advocates that all building adaptation interventions can be assessed according to their value for money and quality of life contributions and explains the method for calculating these ratios and comparing the value add of competing alternatives. Sustainable development is an oxymoron, but the expected level of sustainability from a development can be modelled and used to make decisions that reflect the best combinations of objectives. It is argued that interventions that are feasible (measured in terms of value for money) and desirable (measured in terms of quality of life) can be integrated together to calculate a sustainability index capable of ranking and selecting any type of intervention for any type of building project.
