Sustainability certification labels for buildings
Sustainability or 'green‐building' certificates provide assurance that a building is constructed according to the corresponding certification scheme. Certification schemes were developed with the aim of testing and evaluating buildings in accordance with defined criteria and to make this visible by a 'label'. Certification of buildings to satisfy sustainable criteria provides evidence of a property's high quality, so that it can gain higher rents in the marketplace. This chapter deals with the common certification schemes for sustainable construction and uses a typical steel construction to demonstrate the factors that contribute to a good assessment. The assessment criteria used for certification schemes, such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) or German quality label for sustainable construction (DGNB) or Assessment System for Sustainable Federal Buildings (BNB), offer support for sustainable planning and construction and also serve as a tool for quality assurance.
