Construction Boom and Capitalism
Africa is experiencing a construction boom, both in terms of infrastructure and housing, which translates into a high demand for concrete. This chapter proposes to explore the modes of urban production in Africa through its material make‐up: cement and concrete. It first sheds light on the construction sector and the cement industry in West Africa, with particular attention paid to the actors who support the sector. The chapter then explores the concrete urban forms that are taking shape, both along the corridor and within the city. In parallel with the large private projects aimed at the elite, so‐called “social” housing programs are regularly launched by the governments in place. They are based on agreements between the state, the private sector and banks, encouraged by international donors who support the affordable housing policy.
