X‐ray Computed Tomography for Geotechnical Engineering
This paper describes an application of X‐ray Computed Tomography in Geotechnical Engineering. It is important to discuss on the quantitative evaluation of CT data of geomaterials for the purpose of solving boundary value problem. Here, the basic issues on the CT image are discussed at first. Beam hardening and partial volume effects are presented in details using test results. And then, one of the application studies, which is deformation and failure of the ground due to laterally loaded pile, is presented. Finally, it is confirmed that the results of CT scanning are useful in geotechnical engineering practice and it is believed that this kind of research could be one of new directions for solving the problems in geotechnical engineering.
