Innovation, Implementation and Benefits Realisation
Innovation is the search for a new idea and the presentation of the idea in a form conducive to use. Innovation comprises two steps: the generation of ideas to satisfy identified required functions and a judgement of which of the many ideas generated are of potential use. An evaluation phase reduces the options still further by adding cost, risk, programme and technical data. Finally, the most appropriate option is subject to design development and integration within the evolving project. This chapter describes a number of techniques for idea generation, judgement and evaluation including a discussion of group decision support systems. The importance of implementation as a distinct stage is debated together with a discussion of benefits realisation.
