Regulation: the misdirected mission
Drinking water quality standards must meet a number of criteria if they are to be effective ‐ they must be reasonable, maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) must be measurable, and the standards must be attainable and necessary as a measure to better protect public health. The Safe Drinking Water Act and the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulations are discussed.
