Transformations in Late Nineteenth‐century Rural California
The passion for baseball in the two small rural towns of Davisville and Dixon, was by no means unusual. The game was introduced to rural California during the Gold Rush, gradually gained a foothold over the next two decades, and then caught fire in the 1880s, right as agriculture began to change so dramatically. Nor was the timing a coincidence. Farmers' “devotion to the game” reveals that baseball – heretofore regarded by historians as a largely urban phenomenon – had become deeply rooted in the region's rural culture and that California's agricultural transformation involved much more than planting new crops. Baseball's skyrocketing popularity in the late nineteenth century both influenced and reflected important changes in farmers' social and cultural behavior. Farmers along Putah Creek tended to respond culturally, rather than politically, to the myriad of problems that accompanied the transformation of California agriculture.
