Ground Gases in Urban Environments – Sources and Solutions
This chapter concentrates on ground gas issues arising from sources that commonly cause problems in urban areas where both the problems and solutions can be very different. Ground gases are considered to be all gaseous pollutants emanating from sub‐surface strata with the potential to enter properties, or receptors, in sufficient quantities to possibly cause harm. One of the most significant sources of methane‐rich ground gas in some urban areas arises from old mine workings. Assessing the risks associated with ground gas should be a phased approach with each one tailored on the basis of findings from the previous phase. The suggested approach includes: a desk study, an intrusive site investigation, and a risk assessment. The chapter presents examples of how gas protection details are shown on contract drawings and the corresponding photographs of each detail under construction.
