The author of this letter‐to‐the‐editor comments on an earlier letter by Thomas Schwartz (Journal AWWA, May 1985). In response to the statement that, “the throughput volume of water is greater” for declining‐rate filters (DRF) than for constant‐rate filters (CRF), the author points out that a more correct statement would read, “The throughput volume of water per unit of driving head is greater for DRF than for CRF” because what is meant by head loss can be interpreted in different ways. He states further that the statement should not be construed to claim that a DRF produces more water per unit time than does a CRF.
