Richly structured facades, mighty portals, colorfully tiled entrance foyers and high rooms are the trademarks of the Vienna apartment building. The spectrum ranges from noble palaces to middle-class rental houses to mass apartment buildings. The new building type creates standardized apartments, enables a variety of uses and unites tenants from different social classes under one roof. The book tells the cultural history of the Vienna apartment building as a complex interplay of architectural and social history, urban development and economic factors.
