Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in north east Germany has many castles, great houses and public buildings which show a wider variety of architectural styles, from the early modern era to WWII, than anywhere else. These historic buildings - castles, manor houses and state property houses - were well maintained until the reunification of Germany in 1990 but many have since fallen into vacancy and dilapidation. Little has been done to protect this unique architectural heritage for future generations. Greater awareness of the historical importance of the buildings is needed to ensure they are preserved as an important part of the regional cultural identity. This research aims to reveal for the first time the historic and architectural context of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most important buildings, specifically in relation to the former Grand Duchy Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The research focuses on important buildings constructed between 1780 and 1920 in the Ludwigslust and Amt Neuhaus areas, which form the center for modern architecture in Mecklenburg and Pommerania. Firstly, the topography of each building is analysed and compared with the contemporary architecture of the time. This reveals six distinct categories of architectural development between 1700 and 1939/43. In the next step, the construction of each building is ordered according to the appropriate category. This enables innovative approaches to be identified so that the building can take its rightful place in architectural history ...
