Chronic Lung Impact on Laboratory Worker Exposed to Chloramines and Cyanogen Chloride
Two groups shared the resources of a biological laboratory. One group sterilized waste biological solutions through use of an autoclave. The other group sterilized the waste solutions through addition of sodium hypochlorite bleach; the procedure was normally performed in a fume hood as the resulting mixture had a foul odor. A specific task required the use of the fume hood for a 1 week period; the waste biological solutions were mixed with bleach and left for the day in a nearby sink. The worker that was required to be in front of the fume hood for the 1 week duration suffered an upper respiratory tract injury in the form of vocal cord dysfunction due to exposure to the resultant chloramine and cyanogen chloride gases.
