Maneuvers of Informal Settlement Communities in Access to Drinking Water: Insights from Herat City, Afghanistan
The increase in population along with the transition from rural to urban areas has put huge pressure on water availability and accessibility in informal settlements. Using a mixed research approach with the case study of Herat city, this research aims at exploring the maneuvers of under-resourced informal settlements in navigating alternatives in access to potable water. It is asserted that unplanned communities have adopted unique strategies to water access, including the use of mosques’ water wells, hand pump wells, and private shallow wells. While a private shallow well is an essential source for water provision, its water quality is unreliable. Deep hand pump wells while being another alternative source for the under-privileged communities, long queues, and inadequate maintenance of the water infrastructures are the main hurdles in these communities. The mosque’s water well is another alternative source for water access; however, accessibility, particularly for women, is challenging. While the findings of this research challenge the normative view of water access in developing countries, further research is required to examine the impacts of waste on groundwater resources in unplanned settlements and its potential impacts on marginalized communities.
Unplanned settlements are grappling with water challenges in the face of changing climate and population growth in Herat city.
