EcoPartnership on low-carbon and sustainable urban development
China and the U.S. have strong national policies on sustainability and climate change but personal commitment and bottom-up capacity are also necessary for both countries to achieve their ambitious targets. The Institute for Sustainable Communities and China's National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation launched an EcoPartnership in 2013 to empower concerned citizens from all sectors to champion and pursue impactful projects. In the current phase of the project, custom tailored training modules, expert consultation services, and peer exchanges for local environmental nonprofits, social organizations, and local government officials are driving toward the goal of fostering hundreds of urban sustainability champions across the government, private, and social sectors over the next three years. The aim is for this new cadre of leaders to seed lasting innovations in urban development among peers in their organizations and their professional networks. While the emphasis will be on developing this cohort in China, their efforts and findings will be relevant for a much broader audience.
