A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Some engineers are content with testing the finished material, claiming that it is the province of the manufacturer to obtain the required properties by any method he may choose. Others prescribe a chemical formula or set maxima for certain elements and let the maker do as he will in reaching the result. Still others go to the root of the matter and specify in just what kind of a furnace the steel shall be made, just how that furnace shall be lined, just what stock shall be charged, and just what size ingots shall be cast.
