Elevation of Dynamic Pore Water Pressure Acting on Quay Walls Using 1 g Shaking Table Test
Accurate estimation of dynamic pore water pressure of submerged soil is needed for seismic design of quay walls. Studies have shown complexities involved in estimation of dynamic pore water pressure which are mainly caused by soil/water interactions and excess pore water pressure. In this study, a series of 1-g shaking table tests was conducted to evaluate factors affecting dynamic pore water pressure of submerged soil. Comparison of the pore water pressure estimated using existing solutions with those measured in the model tests indicates that existing solutions fail to accurately predict dynamic pore water pressure for cases where the permeability of backfill soil is in medium range (between 10-4 to 1 cm/s). The results indicate that the discrepancies between the measured and estimated values are likely caused by soil/water interaction, dilative/contractive behavior of backfill soil, and permeability of backfill soil, factors which are not considered in the existing solutions.
