Not even crumbling ironwork, rotting timbers, and a major fire could completely thwart the dramatic plans to preserve and restore the Cutty Sark—the last intact version of Britain’s famed tea clipper ships—by elevating the historically protected vessel approximately 3 m within its dry berth setting. But engineers did have to find a way to prevent the iron-and-timber-framed ship from collapsing under its own weight.
