Indian River Inlet Bridge Coastal Hydraulic and Scour Study
Coastal storms in 2004 and 2005 caused failure of major bridges — primarily through the combination of storm surge and wave action. Lessons learned for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DOT) included a realization that coastal storm factors may require a different hydraulic assessment than normally considered for riverine bridges. The proposed new bridge is planned to be built to carry State Route 1 over the Indian River Inlet which connects Indian River Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. Potential wave loading on the bridge and scour around bridge piers under extreme storm events are two of the most critical issues in design of this new bridge. This paper provides a discussion of the technical approach employed and the main conclusions obtained in this study.
