A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
An attempt has been made to confine the scope of this paper as nearly as possible to the limits defined by the title. Hence, discussion of tangential stresses (shears) and of pile foundations has been omitted entirely. In the "Introduction" an outline of stress distribution formulas is given, with special emphasis on the use of the "concentration factor," a conception applied to soil mechanics only since 1934.
